Strategic Strength

UG is linked with over 40 Nobel Prize winners who researched and lived there during their times. The high standard of research and research-based teaching provides continuing inspiration to expanding the University´s excellence as it faces the challenges confronting universities in the 21st century. Reform projects in research, teaching and administration provide a firm basis for the future.

Research Complement

Interdisciplinarity is much more than a buzzword at UG. It has gained much experience over time with cross-disciplinary research and study centers, i.e., the Center for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture and Forestry and the Center for North American Studies.

UG’s experience has served as background for the increased cooperation of scientists from various disciplines in a number of new research groups, including Biodiversity and Ecology as well as in Media Sciences and Medieval and Early Modern Studies. UG’s Center for Molecular Biosciences conducts research in biology, medicine, chemistry, and agriculture. An added perspective is to be supplied by expanding bioinformatics research as an area of research emphasis.

UG coordinates the network on the genetics of bacteria: 22 work groups from 14 research institutions work with five industrial partners. Furthermore, a group of UG medical researchers are part of the genetics project 'Heart/Circulation'.
