University Consortium (UC) Young Researcher Grant

The University Consortium (UC) Young Researcher Grant provides start-up funding for junior researchers to pursue a project that is relevant to the UC's strategic priorities:

  • Sustainable management of natural resource systems
  • Food and agriculture policy
  • Biotechnology in agriculture
  • Food and health
  • Information and communication technology, bioinformatics, and data management in agriculture

Who may apply for the Grant

  • Any interested graduate faculty member from any of the following participating members of the Southeast Asian University Consortium may apply for the UC Young Researcher Grant:
    • Institut Pertanian Bogor, Indonesia
    • Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia
    • Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia
    • Kasetsart University, Thailand
    • University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines
    • Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia
    • Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand
    • Visayas State University, Leyte, Philippines
    • Central Luzon State University, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines
    • Central Mindanao University, Philippines
    • Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan
    • National Taiwan University, Taiwan
    • University of British Columbia, Canada
  • Not more than 40 years of age at the time of application and with a minimum of five (5) years experience in service;
  • Holder of a PhD degree in agriculture or related fields;
  • Must have been a Principal Investigator (PI) of at least one (1) international research grant; and
  • Is not an ongoing recipient of any grants from the UC.

Conditions of the Grant

  • The maximum amount for the start-up fund is USD 5,000.
  • The study must have collaborators/proponents from at least 2 UC member university.
  • A publication in a Scopus-indexed journal based on the study is a required output of the grant.
  • The awardee must acknowledge the support of the University Consortium in the research and any publications arising from it. He/She must submit to the UC Secretariat a copy of the terminal report of the study.
  • The study preferably should be completed in a year.

Application requirements

The following should be submitted to the UC Secretariat at gsid@searca.org:

  • Letter of Application endorsed by the UC Coordinator of the UC member university where the faculty is connected.
  • Endorsement letter from the Dean of the applicant's Faculty/College.
  • Duly accomplished UC Young Researcher Grant Form endorsed by the UC Coordinator.
  • A copy of the research proposal with rationale, objective, expected output/outcome, line-item budget, and schedule of activities, endorsed by the UC Coordinator.
  • Certification of financial support for the study from other sources, if any.
  • Updated curriculum vitae of the applicant and the collaborators

Conditions of the Grant Release

Forty percent (40%) of the grant shall be released to the faculty upon approval of the research proposal, another 40% will be released upon submission of the progress report and liquidation report for the first release, while the remaining 20% shall be released upon submission of the final report.

Application and Awarding Procedure

  • Once the complete requirements are submitted to the UC Coordinator, he or she will endorse the application to SEARCA, as UC Secretariat, for the approval of the SEARCA Director.
  • Once the application has been approved, SEARCA will issue an award letter for signature of the grantee.
  • The funds will be processed by SEARCA upon receipt of the signed award letter.
  • The grantee will be notified of the bank transfer and a copy of the transfer slip will be provided to him / her.

University Consortium (UC) Seed Fund for Collaborative Research Grants

The University Consortium (UC) provides seed funding amounting to USD 5,000 for studies in line with the University Consortium's strategic priorities as follows:

  • Sustainable management of natural resource systems
  • Food and agriculture policy
  • Biotechnology in agriculture
  • Food and health
  • Information and communication technology, bioinformatics, and data management in agriculture

Who may apply for the Seed Fund for Collaborative Research Grants

A team of interested faculty members from at least two of the following participating members of the Southeast Asian University Consortium may apply for the UC Seed Fund:

  • Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia
  • Kasetsart University, Thailand
  • University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines

Conditions of the Grant

  • To be eligible for the grant, the research study must be in line with the University Consortium's strategic priorities as follows:
    • Sustainable management of natural resource systems
    • Food and agriculture policy
    • Biotechnology in agriculture
    • Food and health
    • Information and communication technology, bioinformatics, and data management in agriculture
  • The maximum amount for the seed funding is USD 5,000
  • The study must have collaborators/proponents from at least 2 UC member universities
  • The awardee must acknowledge the support of the University Consortium in the research and any publications arising from it. He/She must submit to the UC Secretariat a copy of the terminal report of the study.
  • Study preferably to be completed in a year

Application requirements

The following should be submitted to the UC Coordinator of his/her University:

  1. Letter of Application endorsed by the UC Coordinator of the UC member university where the faculty is connected.
  2. Duly accomplished UC Seed Fund for Collaborative Research Grant Form endorsed by the UC Coordinator.
  3. A copy of the concept paper with rationale, objective, expected output/outcome, line-item budget, schedule of activities.
  4. Certification of financial support for the study from other sources, if any.

Conditions and requirements for disbursement of grant

  • Forty percent (40%) of the grant shall be released to the faculty upon approval of the research proposal, another 40% is released upon submission of progress report and liquidation report for the first release, while the remaining 20% shall be released upon submission of the final report.
  • The UC Coordinator endorses the application to SEARCA as UC Secretariat subject to the approval of SEARCA’s Director. Once approval of the grant has been received, the funds will be disbursed by SEARCA.

University Consortium (UC) Faculty Travel Grant for Research provides limited funds for a UC graduate faculty to conduct research in another participating UC member.

Who may apply for the Grant

Any interested graduate faculty member from any of the following participating members of the Southeast Asian University Consortium may apply for the UC Faculty Travel Grant for Research:

  • Duly accomplished UC Faculty Travel Grant for Research Application Form endorsed by the UC Coordinator.
  • Updated curriculum vitae of applicant.
  • Copy of the research project document/proposal detailing the activities to be conducted and contact person(s)/faculty member(s) to meet at the host university.
  • Certification or proof of financial support from other sources, if any.

Conditions of the Grant

  • The grant provides funds for a UC faculty member to conduct research in another participating UC member. The grant covers round trip economy class plane ticket, subsistence allowance for up to 10 days, and incidental expenses. The grant does not include research budget.
  • To be eligible for the grant, the research topic must be relevant to the University Consortium's strategic priorities as follows:
    • Sustainable management of natural resource systems
    • Food and agriculture policy
    • Biotechnology in agriculture
    • Food and health
    • Information and communication technology, bioinformatics, and  data management in agriculture
  • The UC faculty is obliged to submit to the UC Coordinator at his/her university through the Secretariat (SEARCA) a full report of his/her program activities at the host university, e-photos of the visit, and photocopy of the plane ticket.

Conditions and requirements for disbursement of grant

  • The fund for the plane ticket will be released to the UC faculty via bank transfer or reimbursement basis upon submission of valid receipts as proof of purchase.
  • Fifty percent (50%) of the subsistence allowance and incidental expenses will be released to the UC faculty via bank transfer before departure; the balance (50%) to be released upon the UC Secretariat's receipt of notice of UC faculty's arrival in the host university.

University Consortium (UC) Visiting Lecturer Program for Teaching Purposes

The University Consortium (UC) Visiting Lecturer Program for Teaching Purposes provides limited financial support for a UC graduate faculty to teach a graduate course in his/her field of discipline at another participating UC member.

Who may apply for the Grant

Any interested graduate faculty member from any of the following participating members of the Southeast Asian University Consortium may apply for the UC Visiting Lecturer Program for Teaching Purposes:

  1. Duly accomplished Application Form for Visiting Lecturer Program for Teaching Purposes endorsed by the UC Coordinator of the sending UC member.
  2. Updated Curriculum vitae of applicant.
  3. Proposal indicating objectives of the visit, and activities/work plan and projected outcome of the visit.

Conditions of the Grant

  • The grant provides funds to cover round-trip economy class plane ticket and subsistence allowance for food and accommodation, and incidental expenses for a maximum of 10 days.
  • The UC faculty is obliged to submit to the UC Coordinator at his/her university through the UC Secretariat (SEARCA) a travel report, e-photos for publication purposes, e-copy of lecture paper, and photocopy of plane ticket. The support of the University Consortium must also be acknowledged in the report.

Condition and requirement for disbursement of grant

  • The funds will be released to the UC Faculty through his/her bank account upon submission of the following to the UC Secretariat: timetable of activities at the host university, copy of the syllabus or lecture paper and invoice for the plane ticket.

The University Consortium (UC) Faculty Travel Grant for Conference/Seminar provides limited funds that can allow a UC graduate faculty to participate and present an oral paper in a conference/seminar organized by another participating UC member.

  • Duly accomplished UC Faculty Travel Grant for Conference/Seminar Application Form endorsed by the UC Coordinator of the sending UC member.
  • Copy of abstract of paper to be presented.
  • Copy of the invitation letter and acceptance of full paper to be presented.
  • Updated curriculum vitae of applicant.
  • Certification or proof of financial support from other sources, if any.

Conditions of the Grant

  • To be eligible for the grant, the conference/seminar theme where the paper is to be presented must be relevant to the University Consortium’s strategic priorities as follows:
    • Sustainable management of natural resource systems
    • Food and agriculture policy
    • Biotechnology in agriculture
    • Food and health
    • Information and communication technology, bioinformatics, and  data management in agriculture
  • The grant provides limited funds of up to US$1,200.00 to cover round-trip economy class plane ticket and subsistence allowance for food and accommodation (if not supported by the organizing university). 
  • The UC faculty is obliged to submit to the UC Coordinator at his/her university through the UC Secretariat (SEARCA) a travel report, final copy (PDF format) of the full paper presented, a copy of the final conference program where the title of the paper and name of the presenter are included, and photocopy of plane ticket. The support of the University Consortium must be acknowledged in the report and in the paper presented.  Poster presentations are not considered for the grant.

Conditions and requirements for disbursement of grant

  • The actual amount will be released to the UC Faculty grantee through his/her bank account upon submission of the following to the UC Secretariat: a copy of the abstract of paper to be presented, copy of the conference/seminar program where the paper authored by the UC Faculty is indicated, and a scanned copy of the invoice for plane ticket.
